What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects millions of people worldwide. PD causes motor symptoms such as tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, and postural instability, as well as non-motor symptoms such as cognitive impairment and depression. While there is currently no cure for PD, there are various treatments that can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Two such treatments are LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD.
LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD are evidence-based therapies designed specifically for people with PD. Developed by Dr. Lorraine Ramig and Dr. Cynthia Fox. These therapies focus on improving the amplitude and quality of movement (LSVT BIG) and vocal loudness (LSVT LOUD) through intensive, high-effort training. Wyomissing Physical Therapy is the only facility in Reading, PA with a certified LSVT BIG and LOUD instructor. We believe that all of our patients with PD should receive the quality of care they deserve.
What is LSVT BIG?
LSVT BIG is a physical therapy program that uses specific exercises to increase the amplitude of movement in people with PD. The program includes exercises such as large stepping, reaching, and turning movements, all of which are designed to help patients move with more confidence and fluidity. The therapy also emphasizes the use of "big" movements in daily activities, such as reaching for objects on high shelves or walking with a longer stride. With this training, patients can improve their balance, coordination, and overall mobility.
What is LSVT LOUD?
LSVT LOUD, on the other hand, is a speech therapy program that focuses on improving vocal loudness in people with PD. Many people with PD experience soft or monotone speech, which can make communication difficult. LSVT LOUD helps patients learn to speak louder and with greater clarity. The program includes exercises such as sustained vowel sounds, reading aloud, and conversation practice, all of which are designed to improve voice projection and articulation. The therapy also emphasizes the use of "loud" speech in daily activities, such as speaking in noisy environments or talking on the phone.
Is LSVT BIG and LOUD Effective?
Research has shown that LSVT BIG and LSVT LOUD can be highly effective in improving motor and speech symptoms in people with PD. Studies have found that patients who undergo LSVT BIG show significant improvements in gait, balance, and overall mobility, and those who undergo LSVT LOUD show significant improvements in speech volume and clarity. Even more impressive, these improvements have been shown to last for up to two years following the completion of therapy.
