BFR (Blood Flow Restriction) Therapy or Occlusion Training

Wyomissing Physical Therapy is the only certified facility in Berks County providing Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) therapy exclusively by the Delfi System, the leading, state-of-the-art BFR system.

Blood Flow Restriction Therapy or Training was initially developed in the 1960s in Japan and referred to as KAATSU training. It works through the application of external pressure to the muscle being trained. They apply such pressure by means of an inflatable cuff that can be worn on the upper or lower limbs. The cuff maintains a certain pressure as the patient performs specific low-resistance exercises, producing the benefits of high-intensity exercises. BFRT or occlusion training reduces the overall stress placed on the limb, while gaining strength faster. This treatment is typically used during exercise, but can also involve the use of compression devices alone.

Blood Flow Restriction Therapy or Training is extremely effective for athletes, those recovering from an injury or surgery, or individuals looking to gain strength and maintain healthy muscles.

Our BFRT Equipment

Wyomissing Physical Therapy only uses state-of-the-art BFRT equipment, by Delfi Medical. Their Personalized Tourniquet System (PTS) offers safe and controlled use of BFRT, designed for optimal outcomes. Delfi systems are used by major league and collegiate sports teams,  rehabilitation centres, and an extensive network of Personalized BFR research facilities.

What to Expect During BFRT

During BFR training or therapy, a patient exercises with a pressure tourniquet applied to the affected muscle. The tourniquet partially restricts venous blood flow, but not arterial inflow to the extremity. Doing this produces a systemic response, comparable to heavy weight training. Wearing pressure tourniquets and using light exercise allows the patient to receive the benefits of heavy lifting without the unnecessary stress to tissues.

What Our Patients Are Saying

Thanks to Joe Miller I got to go the Miami vs ND Football game. I had developed sciatica 10 days before my drive to ND and could not move. Joe did some muscle stimulation and insisted I did a few exercises a few times a day. He also gave me a lecture to make sure I stopped every 2 hours on my drive out & back to the big game to stretch. He was a miracle worker for me!!!

This is the 2nd time Joe Miller took care of me after knee surgery. He knew how far and hard to push me both physically and mentally after this go around with a knee replacement. He, Lori and all of the staff were all wonderful in helping me to get me back to myself again following surgery. Even after a minor setback with needing another surgery for something else, I managed to get back to normal in a decent amount of time. They are all very professional and top notch!
